Here is a great example of an audio upgrade for a 2005 BMW X5. We de-installed the factory stereo and pulled out all the old tech.

Then added a Kenwood 5020DABS + complete can-bus BMW X5 conversion kit.

The  conversion kit retains the steering wheel control and provides ignition, sped pulse and reversing signals.
